Will being on birth control pills affect Sclerotherapy treatments?

I've heard that birth control pills can have an effect on the vein walls, softening them and causing problems. Is this true? Could being on the pill then create problems with sclerotherapy?

Being on BCP'S is not a contraindication to sclerotherapy. There is a reported increased risk of DVT with hormonal replacement but low. Neovascularization or matting has been reported to occur with increased frequency .

There is not strong data suggesting that BCP's effect the results of sclerotherapy. The major concerns would be a possible increased incidence of DVT and increased blushing or matting, but no data to date has shown this.

There is evidence that estrogen and progesterone cause veins to be more elastic. But I would not have concerns about taking birth control and completing vein treatment. There should be no problems.

I generally do not have patients stop bcp for sclerotherapy, but there is perhaps a slightly increased chance of blood clots in the leg. Efficacy of the treatment should be good in either case.

Birth control pills place you at slightly higher risk for deep vein thrombosis, but should not affect the sclerotherapy results.
