Will compression stockings help my gait? What about pain?

My right knee patela was dislocated two months ago. I still can't walk properly and I have pain in my knee now. My doctor recommended I wear knee-high compression stockings. Do you think they will help my gait and the pain?

No, I don't think compression hose would do as much as a good knee brace.

If the pain is from the knee injury, I would not expect much improvement with knee-high support stockings.

In general, compression therapy is not indicated for patellar dislocation, unless your ankles became swollen due to the original trauma. Regardless, you might benefit rather from a knee brace. If the knee does not become significantly better by week 12 since the injury, you must see an orthopedic surgeon, even if you saw one immediately after the dislocation. If you have any problems below the knee, you should see a vascular surgeon. Good luck!

They certainly will help; they never hurt most folks. But to be sure if they will assist with the problems you mentioned, you do need to check-in with your orthopedist.

Because your movement may be limited at this time, knee compression may help prevent blood clots and support your leg. I would ask the doctor if a lower weight (15-20 mmHg) pressure thigh-length hose might support the knee as well. It would be his decision.

I do not think it will help our gait. The pressure may help the pain by keeping the patella in place or providing pressure on it. That would be my guess. I would ask an orthopedic doctor about this. The compression hose will definitely help with swelling.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
