Six months after varicose vein surgery and I'm experiencing bad pain. Is this normal? What should I do?

Six months ago I had varicose vein surgery. I've been experiencing bad pain. I went back to see the consultant & had a scan, He said everything is working fine and that it must be the effects of the surgery. We'll that does not help me as I'm in pain & getting pins & needles in my leg, especially in a morning. I've tried all pain relief and nothing has been working. I'm using Volrol cream now as it seems to work a bit. What should I do? Is any of this normal? What could be going on?

What you are experiencing is not normal. My patients at 6 months typically feel really good. Why you are having issues, really depends on what was done in your vein surgery (laser, stripping, injections) and what you actually had wrong to begin with.

The discomfort you are reporting sounds like nerve irritation from either trauma associated with the treatment or localized inflammation from affected regional veins. Again, it depends on what was done in the first place. That said, a good vein doc should be able to take all of the information that I mentioned and tell you why you are having issues and then turn around and fix it the majority of the time.

If your doc is telling you that everything is fine and you are still hurting, then that doc should be able to explain to you where the pain is coming from. If they do not know, then you need to find a doc who only does vein treatment. My guess it that you will find the answer to your problem there.

If there hasn't been any nerve involvement from the surgery, it may be possible that your symptoms are not related to the surgery. Pins and needles and pain in the legs may also be caused by a low back issue. Without a full history of which procedures you underwent (laser, RF, Stripping etc.), it is difficult to determine the cause.

I would recommend a second opinion by a board-certified vascular surgeon.
