Are knee-high or thigh-high compresssion stockings recommended. post-saphenous ablation?

I'm scheduled for bilateral greater saphenous vein ablation and the prescribed thigh-high compression stockings are not available. Are knee-high compression stockings an acceptable alternative?

You should wear thigh-high compression stockings. If thigh-high compression stockings are not available, you can wear compression pantyhose.

I wrap patients in a thigh-high ace bandage for 24 hours post-ablation of the GSV, then switch to knee-high for 48 hours.

Knee-high stockings are not ideal but they may work. A wrap on the thigh may be needed. I would discuss this with your surgeon.

No, they are not. You need compression over the thigh where the vein is being treated.

The recommended hose are thigh-length as the thigh is where the long saphenous vein is mainly treated. If your surgeon doesn't have the hose on hand, they are available at a medical supply store or online. However, you must be correctly measured. Failing that, the surgeon can wrap the thigh area with ace bandages, both for your comfort and compression of the treated area.

Thigh-high is preferable for ablation of the great saphenous vein. Knee-high would be acceptable if the small saphenous vein was being ablated. This protocol helps obtain a 97% success rate.
