I really don't want to end up with vein problems once my daughter is born. Can wearing compression stockings during pregnancy prevent varicose veins?

During the first trimester hormones are released that causes veins to relax and after pregnancy they become smaller but often are still enlarged. It has been shown that with increased number of pregnancies the risk of varicose veins increases. Therefore, compression stockings during pregnancy may help. Unfortunately, we don't know for sure but it will at least help control and symptom and probably swelling in the legs.

Varicose veins can get much worse during pregnancy but not always. Wearing compression stockings will both help symptoms and may actually decrease progression of the varicose veins to some extent although data on this is somewhat limited. You should talk to your OBGYN about this if you have venous symptoms/bulging veins.

Varicose veins are ultimately due to refluxing valves usually in the saphenous system or accessory veins. This is due to many reasons including hereditary factors and pregnancy. Compression stockings during pregnancy will help to reduce the venous pressure and increase the venous return to reduce the risk of future vein problems but it is no guarantee, and, in fact, the more pregnancies the greater the chance of developing spider and varicose veins.
