This pain occurs after I have been active on my legs. My varicose vein surgery was about five months ago.
Pain after varicose vein treatment usually lasts days to weeks. If you are
still experiencing pain after five months, I would recommend going back to your
doctor to have another ultrasound and evaluation. You may need more
vein treatments in your leg.

It depends if all the problematic veins were treated. Sometimes after laser treatments, the legs will be sore for 6 months or possibly longer. If there are still other veins to treat then that would be something to have done as well.

It should have gone away by now. You should probably be rechecked by your doctor to see if they have an explanation.

If by surgery you mean ambulatory phlebectomy, a tiny sensory twig may often
be traumatized. Recovery varies and takes a year or two. If you are referring to vein
ablation, thermal injury can take place. Nerve recovery is a long process, fortunately rare.

Not knowing the exact type of surgery you had, it is hard to say if the post-operative pain you are experiencing is what could be considered normal. After most varicose vein procedures, there can be pain and or discomfort for up to two weeks and possible swelling in the lower extremity for four to six weeks.
The numbness you refer to can take sometimes up to one year to fully resolve. In most case though the numbness is just that, and the sensation itself more of a nuisance than anything else. If you are having real, intractable pain and it is five months since your surgical procedure, I would advise you to return to your provider and perhaps ask for a neurological referral. It could be that you are suffering from a condition called dysaesthesia as a result of your vein procedure and, though rare, this can be quite painful and may take some type to abate. The best way to treat this, as I say, is to see your provider and then, perhaps, a neurologist.

It is not unusual to have some numbness and aches for several months post
treatment. If your veins were very large, then it does take longer to
completely heal. However, I would suggest you follow up with the clinician
that performed you vein treatment.

It is difficult to predict how much pain will resolve after vein closure
procedures or how long the achiness will persist. In general, if you are
still having significant pain and discomfort 5-6 months later, you might
want to inquire about having a repeat ultrasound performed to make sure
nothing new has opened up and has become insufficient. I usually will only
seal off veins which are leaking significantly at the first setting and ask
patients to return for further assessment if their pain persists or returns
to make sure other veins, which were normal on original scan, have not
become leaky in the months following their first procedure.

Most closure procedures are fully healed by 3 - 4 weeks and occasionally this may take up to 3 months. Numbness may be due to nerve injury and could take up to one year to resolve. Beyond one year, nerve injury will probably not get better. You are five months post op and still tender. You should follow up with your treating physician.
