I had a varicose vein stripped 3 years ago but my leg still hurts and I have swelling in my ankle often. Is it normal?

I had a surgery in 2013 after the rupture of a vein. I was living in Dubai at the time and surgery in the UAE sucks since they don't provide appropriate pain relief. My leg has hard spots that are tender to the touch. Also, my ankle hurts and swells up often. Is it normal so long after surgery?

No, it's not normal. You need to be re-evaluated with ultrasound.

You need to be evaluated by a vascular-trained surgeon, one who will analyze your problem, including ultrasound to look at your deep and superficial systems. Without this it is difficult to comment. And no, your symptoms are not "normal". I recommend being fitted and measured for a thigh-length stocking of at least 20-30 mmHg to control your swelling and pain.

It is difficult to determine what is wrong from what you say. You need to see a vein specialist for a full venous evaluation, including a complete venous duplex ultrasound. This will help to determine the diagnosis as well as the possible treatments.

I would consider a new venous ultrasound study to determine if you have venous insufficiency in the veins that remain. You may need vein procedures to get rid of the problem, but the best place to start is at a reputable vein center with an ultrasound.
