I planned to do a 5K cancer walk the day after endovenous laser ablation. The procedure is scheduled for one leg. Can I still participate in the event?
Always communicate with your provider to clarify your post-procedure instructions and any question or concern.
Post-EVLA, I generally recommend patients wear an ace bandage during the daytime and after it is removed, don a medical compression stocking for at least one week. Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for two weeks after the procedure, but walking and staying active is encouraged.
It is very important to come back for your follow up ultrasound scan at 3 to 7 days after vein ablation.
All the best!

It's probably not a good idea to participate in such a strenuous activity a day after the ablative therapy. I would rather suggest to go ahead with the walk first and then schedule the laser ablation afterwards, especially if the walk is very dear and near to your heart.

Probably. We encourage walking at least an hour a day starting the day of the ablation. So I would personally be fine with you participating. You will likely have a mild pulling sensation in your thigh, which some may find uncomfortable, so there is a chance you may not feel up to it. However, for almost all my patients, they would be fine with the participation.

You will be sore and you will have either an ace wrap or support hose on your leg. A 5K may be a little long to walk one day post closure procedure.

Theoretically yes, but that's pushing it. Why don't you decide which is the most important to you at this time and make it comfortable for yourself. You can always walk in your compression stockings without hurting yourself and reschedule your procedure but I see no reason to make yourself uncomfortable, especially if you anticipate that you are going to have extensive microphlebectomy (stab avulsions) as part of your planned endogenous laster ablation.

I would say yes as long as you wear your compression hose.

To me it seems like bad timing. I would schedule the ablation after the walk because you may feel some discomfort with that much walking the very next day. It can be done, but I would not advise it.

I think that you should call your vein specialist to discuss the after care. We would not recommend it since you might experience leg pain, if you walk a 5K marathon.

Walking is very beneficial after endovenous ablation, but you should check with your physician who is doing the procedure for their recommendation.

Yes, I recommend wearing a strong support stocking for the walk.

Wow, that's a bit much. I would recommend scheduling the laser after the walk. You would not want to have the vein reopen and the soreness may keep you from finishing.
