I have pain and tenderness in the lower calf area that is concentrated near my ankle after an EVLT done 3 weeks ago. What is causing this?

I have pain and tenderness in the lower calf area that is concentrated near the ankle after an EVLT done 3 weeks ago. This symptom has been persistent for 1 week now. The doctor advised me to elevate my leg as much as possible, along with walking and wearing compression stockings. I want to travel soon and need a solution to this. I have 2 concerns: what could be the cause of this, and is there any medication to alleviate pain and swelling? I have been taking Aleve.

There may be an injury to the saphenous nerve. Discuss this with the doctor. Advil 2-3 with each meal for 3-4 days.

It is most likely superficial vein thrombophlebitis. However, a scan should be done before your travel to exclude the possibility of a deep vein blood clot.

Your symptoms are not uncommon following a closure procedure. If you had the GSV treated, then you may have pain along the medial ankle and if the SSV, then there could be pain over the Achilles area. This is due to either inflammation of the distal vein or even clotting of the vein from the procedure.

Applying wet heat to the area, compression hose and ibuprofen all help. A venous ultrasound may also help to see any abnormalities. These symptoms should resolve with time.
