I have peripheral neuropathy in my lower limbs. Are compression stockings recommended?

I have a very slow healing venous ankle ulcer and would like to know my options.

The best treatment for a venous stasis ulcer is to treat the cause which is valvular insufficiency of the superficial or perforator system. Support hose will help to reduce the venous pressure but you should see a vein specialist for a full venous evaluation.

Compression stockings will not likely help your peripheral neuropathy. But will help with healing of your venous ulcer. I would go see a wound care specialist as well as a vascular/vein specialist who deals with venous ulcers to discuss endovascular treatment options.

You likely will need some type of ablation of your great saphenous vein as well as occluding tributary veins around the ulcer with sclerotherapy.

You should be thoroughly evaluated, including ultrasound examination, to establish the cause of the ulcer (venous, arterial, diabetic). Compression hose should help if the ulcer is venous in origin.

Compression stockings can help the ulcer if it is venous in etiology regardless if you have a peripheral neuropathy or not. If you have reflux (leaky valves) of the saphenous vein(s), they need to be treated with thermal ablation for definitive treatment.

You need to visit a vascular specialist to get thoroughly evaluated for whole superficial and deep venous systems and get a definite plan of care for venous ulcers. Venous ulcers are not managed conservatively forever, since they mostly recur. Compression stockings are only a temporary treatment.

There are many treatment options that could help, but you need to be examined by your physician before a treatment plan can be determined.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
