Are my post-laser surgery symptoms indicative of nerve damage?

Laser surgery was performed twice on the saphenous veins of each leg over the course of 8 days. Not enough numbing medication was given, so I felt burning twice in my right and once in my left leg. Afterwards, I experienced a great deal of pain and still do. I am on 150 mg of Lyrica a day. The pain is more from a "shackling" effect around my ankles and on my shin. The right leg is most affected. It has been 4 months since the procedures. Are my symptoms indicative of nerve damage?

It is difficult to say if your pain is nerve-related. When veins close to the skin are treated by laser, the symptoms that you describe can occur. This is due to the skin heating from the laser and may take 6 months to a year to resolve. A nerve can also be heated from the laser and be injured from the heat. Fortunately, these nerves do heal over time. You should follow up with your treating physician.

Your symptoms may represent a form of nerve damage. As the saphenous vein and saphenous nerve become more intimate in the lower leg, it is more likely to occur between the mid-calf and ankle. Some of the symptoms may be temporary and actually take up to a year to resolve. I recommend that you follow up with the physician who performed the procedures for more specific details.

If you had vein removed, It is possible there is nerve damage. The only sure way to know is for you to see a specialist (i.e. a neurologist)

It sounds like you have an element of nerve injury or irritation. This should get better over time, possibly taking many months. Your doctor might consider placing you on Neurontin (gabapentin), which is often very helpful in reducing sensitivity.

Nerve damage can occur after laser ablation, but it's rare. It can be associated with low laser access punctures (well below the knees near the ankles) and inadequate tumescent anesthesia. Much more common causes of bilateral neuropathy (nerve damage) are diabetes, back problems, severe arterial blockages and certain medicines such as chemotherapy. Unfortunately once nerve damage occurs after a laser ablation, the treatment options are limited. Nerves heal slowly, if at all.
