Is it normal to have drastically prominent varicose veins in my feet post abrasion of my R. great saph. last summer? They weren't a problem prior.

Hello! I'm a 28 year old female who just the last few years has had vein issues. I'm not overweight and am active. I had bad reflux in my right leg, so I had my right great saph. abrasion done last summer. The past 6 months I've noticed a drastic change in both my feet. Varicose veins popping out horribly. No prior problems with my feet. Did the abrasion cause this? What can I do? They're very unsightly and uncomfortable. I wear 30 mmhg compression socks.

This is not a usual scenario, and you should probably be re-evaluated.

You are doing the right thing, wearing compression hose. It possibly could be you have branch vein reflux that was not addressed by the ablation of the greater saphenous main vein. You should return for a thorough lower extremity venous ultrasound to map your veins if it wasn't done during your prior visits.

Your problem is unrelated to the ablation and the proof of that is that your foot problem appeared in both legs, not just the right. Go back to your vein doctor for re-evaluation.

The fact that you have this problem in both feet and only ablation in the right legs makes the two things unlikely to be related. I recommend you see your surgeon and have a repeat ultrasound of both legs. Wearing the hose is appropriate. People who are lean and in good shape often have prominent veins on their feet (and hands) and this can increase as we age.
