Varicose Vein Surgery . 7 answers . 2 years ago

I had varicose vein surgery done on both legs 12 weeks ago and I've got a lot of bruises and it hurts. Is there something wrong? I had about 6 veins taken out from ankle to groin.

It's not abnormal to have procedure pain even after 3 months. It is possible that you might have some superficial clot in some of those areas, and that is probably why you have tenderness. Don't worry, even if you did have some superficial clotting, it is not usually a health hazard. It is more often just painful and bothersome. I recommend having a follow up as soon as you can with your primary care provider. If there is superficial clotting, he could possibly drain some of those clots to relieve some of the pain.

No, this is not normal 12 weeks after treatment. I would recommend a follow up examination by the physician that performed your procedure.

Twelve weeks is a long time to still have pain following vein surgery. I am not sure what kind of procedure you had was it laser closure, ligation and stripping or phlebotomies? Usually, with laser or phlebotomies 2 to 3 weeks to recover is normal. For ligation and stripping, usually 4 to 6 weeks would be typical. You should follow up with your surgeon.

If you had a vein stripping then you may still have some pain and bruising. This should not be new bruising but remaining bruising from the original procedure. If you had RFA or laser then you should not be having any symptoms at this point.
