Compression Stockings . 6 answers . 2 years ago

I am 21 years old and just bought some compression stockings but im not sure if thats what I need. My legs are always very tired, feel heavy, and also feel swollen around my ankles. I've also noticed a couple of spider veins on my legs.

Sounds like the right thing to do for your type of symptoms. There may be procedures to help as well if the stockings aren't enough, see a vein specialist.

Firstly, anyone who works standing for many hours, sits for long period such as computer jobs or travelling can benefit from some form of compression. For maintenance travel/work we usually recommend 15-20 mmHg compression. If you are symptomatic you should have a full evaluation from a Board Certified surgeon who specializes in vein treatment. This will include a family history and ultrasound examination to rule out venous insufficiency. We have treated quite a number of young people who have hereditary venous disease with great results.. Your surgeon will recommend the appropriate compression and ensure you are measured correctly.

If the hose make your legs feel better, you may have venous insufficiency. If so, you may benefit from a consult from a vein specialist.

Based on your symptoms you could benefit by wearing them. Have you had you veins checked? Have you seen a Vein Specialist?

The first step would be to see a vein specialist to have your veins evaluated. A venous ultrasound would help to evaluate you for reflux. Tired legs may have many causes and it may not be due to your veins at all. At 21, exercise and weight control may be all that you need.
