I was just diagnosed with Reflux Disease. I have 3 small lumps just above ankle. I chose to use compression stockings as my first course of action.

Do you think this is a wise choice? My doctor thought it was ok. I see him in
3 months to decide on ablation, or whatever. Besides stockings, is exercising another good option. I really do not want to have a procedure done unless necessary.

Yes; depending on your age, activity, and severity of the problem- treating with compression may be perfectly fine.

Exercise is good and there is nothing wrong with going the conservative route with compression hose. Re-evaluate the situation in 3 months.

Compression hose are a great conservative measure to keep your symptoms at bay- such as the heaviness and throbbing- however- if your venous insufficiency is already in its later stages, where the vessel is incompetent- very dilated and you have reflux present- then they will NOT make a significant improvement and surgical intervention is more than likely required. When you go back for a reevaluation- you will more than likely find that no great improvement has been made. Wear the compression hose as tolerated and try to elevate your legs as much as possible in the meantime.
Good luck to you.

Almost all patients with leg pain, swelling and/or varicose veins benefit by wearing graded compression stockings. If symptoms persist despite wearing compression stockings, then venous ablation and stab phlebectomy are the next therapeutic options.

If the 3 lumps that you describe are varicose veins then compression hose and exercise would be a good option at this time. However, compression and exercise will not make the varicose veins go away. If you have varicose veins, symptoms and reflux then, ultimately, a closure procedure would be indicated.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
