Wearing Ted Hose 24 hours?

Compression Stockings . 5 answers . 2 years ago

My wife has no movement on her left side, therefore can not move her left leg and can not circulate the blood in that leg. Should she wear Ted Hose 24 hours a day?

Generally you remove them a couple of times a day to check the skin and bathe. For perhaps an hour or so, but check with her MD as this can depend on the amount of leg swelling etc.

Normally when the legs are elevated there is no need to wear the TEDS. However, if you your wife has a problem with swelling when up during the day, it would be best to apply the hose before she gets up - this will reduce swelling. Anyone who has reduced mobility can benefit from a light compression hose such as TEDS.

A much better option would be an intermittent compression pump which inflates a plastic bladder around the calf to stimulate venous flow. This also releases substances from the vein wall which provide some degree of inhibition of clotting

I assume the problem is neurologic (stroke or MS?). The best choice would be for her to wear graduated compression stockings, that are better than TED hoses.

She should wear support hose as much a possible assuming that the arterial circulation in that leg is adequate. The support hose replace the actions of the calf muscles to pump the venous blood back to the heart. If her arterial circulation is compromised and the compression is too tight, this may affect her arterial leg flow.
