Is local, topical, or general anesthesia typically used during this procedure?
Typically a local anesthetic is used such as lidocaine.? No other anesthetic is necessary.? The lidocaine is important for the entire procedure because it is also used to anesthetize the part of the vein being treated so that the heat from the laser is not a problem for the patient.
Most of my cases are performed using local anesthesia. A small percentage need a sedative. In my opinion, general anesthesia is not warranted for this procedure.
Local anesthesia (tumescent). There is no need for general anesthesia.
Local tumescent anesthesia is used. Some physicians may also give an oral sedative or pain medicatiion.
Just local anesthetic , Lidocaine, is used for pain control. This is the safest and most effective way to prevent discomfort. General Anesthesia is just not necessary and it ads additional risks. Topical anesthesia rarely can provide adequate anesthesia.
