I have swelling and discomfort on my legs above my knee-high compression stockings. Is this normal?

When I wear my compression knee-high socks, the lower legs feel OK, but right above the stockings, the tissue is swollen and causing discomfort. I have recently had veins closed in the upper-inside area of my thighs and lower-back calves. I will have a very large vein stripped and removed in about 20 sections on the 1st of March on my right leg.

It could be normal, but could also mean that the compression hose don't fit well.

From what I can understand you had some type of vein ablation of the thigh vein - the great saphenous vein. You should be wearing either thigh-high stockings or pantyhose compression using 20-30mmHg compression. I usually advise patients to continue to wear their stockings through treatment and on follow up for at least until all the treatments are completed. This is also helpful to patients in terms of keeping the closed veins compressed, and seems to help with the level of post-procedure discomfort. The discomfort level varies with the size and depth of the vein, and of course patient's pain tolerance. But all of these things considered, wearing compression stockings in the treatment phase helps. It's important to consider the veins involved, and the treatment rendered.Thigh-high stockings alone are not adequate, and actually increase the swelling of the non-compressed thigh and cause the symptoms.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
