The Jefferson Health Vein Treatment Comprehensive Vein Care Practice provides a full spectrum of care to patients with vein related problems, including Varicose and Spider Veins, Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, Deep Vein Thrombosis and Post-Thrombotic Syndrome. Your initial clinical evaluation will involve a comprehensive assessment of the above conditions to determine candidacy for treatment via minimally invasive endovascular procedures. For patients who are not candidates, we offer medical management, conservative therapy, and/or referral within our strong network of affiliated providers. The physicians at the Jefferson Vein Treatment Practice were some of the first to perform endovenous laser ablation in Philadelphia and performed the first Venaseal™ glue closure procedure at an academic hospital in Philadelphia. These procedures allow patients to walk out of the same-day procedure and immediately return to their daily activities. They also provide comprehensive management of vein disease with the addition of Ambulatory Phlebectomy (aka vein removal) and Sclerotherapy procedures as needed to optimize outcomes. Our Interventional Radiologists will perform a comprehensive assessment to identify the optimal personalized treatment plan for each patient. Drs. Gonsalves, Tan and Winokur are committed to providing high quality care and are present providing all aspects of each patient’s care at their newly renovated outpatient office space or in sophisticated procedure suites at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. In addition to clinical care excellence, these physicians in academic practice are leaders in the field through participation with the American Vein and Lymphatic Society and Society of Interventional Radiology allowing patients the opportunity for the newest and most advanced care for their vein disease.

Services Offered

Conservative Therapy

Graduated compression stockings are the mainstay of management for symptomatic varicose veins. Unfortunately, support stockings, frequent walking and weight loss do not always eliminate quality of life affecting symptoms. If you fall into this category, other forms of treatment, described below, are available to improve both the cosmetic appearance of your legs as well as alleviate associated symptoms.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

EVLT is a minimally invasive technique to treat varicose veins. It is performed at the Jefferson Vein Treatment Practice by Jefferson Health's Interventional Radiologists to close the abnormal vein leading to painful or visible varicose veins. Elimination of these veins helps reduce the pain and severity of varicose veins. Our physicians are among the nation’s leaders in advancement of this technique. The procedure is performed in a new and modern outpatient office with only local anesthetic, little to no pain or scarring and a short recovery period. The procedure takes about 1 hour and patients are asked to walk immediately after the procedure and resume most of their normal activities.

Venaseal

The Venaseal procedure is a novel development in vein care allowing for vein closure without the use of heat from the laser. Similar to EVLT, your doctor will sterilize your leg and insert a small catheter into the vein that needs to be treated using ultrasound guidance. Once the tip of the catheter is appropriately positioned, small drops of glue will be delivered along the length of the abnormal vein while the catheter is withdrawn to the entry site. After closing the vein, blood is again re-routed to other normal veins.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy, also known as microphlebectomy is a minor surgical procedure that can be used to eliminate larger varicose veins. This procedure is also performed in the office using only a local anesthetic. The veins are removed through tiny skin nicks and can be done at the same time EVLT. No stitches are necessary, the scars are barely visible and patients are extremely satisfied with the aesthetic outcomes. The procedure takes about 1 hour and patients are instructed to immediately walk and resume most of their usual activities.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minor office procedure that eliminates spider veins as well as small to medium varicose veins. The injection needles are smaller than those used for the flu shot, and the chemical (sclerosant) is injected directly into the abnormal veins. The treatment lasts anywhere from 15-20 minutes, and you can resume nearly all of your activities. You must wear support stockings during the daytime for a few days after the procedure to help further close the veins.
