Your complex circulatory system is normally a one-way street—arteries carry blood away from the heart, and veins carry it back again for fresh oxygen. Your legs have three different types of veins: superficial veins lying just under the skin, which drain into communicating veins, which in turn channel blood into deep veins. The deep veins are inside muscles, and carry most of the blood back to the heart.
Veins have several one-way valves along their length to keep blood flowing only to the heart as your muscles contract and squeeze it along. When muscles relax, the valves shut so blood cannot flow backward (or ‘reflux’) to the feet. For various reasons, veins’ valves can become dysfunctional and lead to pooling of blood in the veins of the lower legs, and ultimately pooling of blood and fluid in the whole leg (causing swelling). This creates high pressure and stretching of the vein walls, and with time these become the bulging varicose veins. Vein disease (also called chronic venous insufficiency) can cause spider veins, varicose veins, phlebitis, leg swelling and pain, and leg skin changes such as ulcers.
Over 25 million Americans have some form of vein disease (15% of the adult population). Vein disease is a broad term that includes all of the very common conditions by which veins become diseased or abnormal. Our top cardiovascular specialists are experienced in diagnosing and treating the full range of vein disease conditions.
