Are Varicose Veins Indicative of a Serious Health Problem?

Updated on: August 18, 2014

If you ever happen to go to a beach, you will notice that there are many different body types that are present. First, there are those who are athletic and like to walk around wearing as little clothing as they can. Then, there are the very obese people who also like to wear minimal amounts of clothing. These two extremes are punctuated by people of an average body type who might or might not like to show their bodies off.

The older women who walk the beach in their swimsuits might have varicose veins that are clearly visible. These women are to be applauded, because they are obviously not self conscious about them. Actually, these kinds of veins are not restricted to just older women, they can occur in younger women as well.

Varicose veins are immediately recognizable in that they considerably raised off of the skin, are puffy, and are dark green, blue, or purplish in color. These kinds of veins are also much more likely to happen in women than in men. Understandably, when women see varicose veins on their legs, they want to know how they got there in the first place.

One of the main causes of these kinds of veins is excessive weight gain. With all the unhealthy food available (that at the same time tastes so delicious!) it is no wonder that some women end up gaining more eight than they should. This excess weight can also occur because of pregnancy.

However, this excess weight puts a lot of pressure on the veins, which in turn makes it harder for blood to pass through them. So, in an effort to make sure that the blood is able to flow through, some of the veins swell. In the case of women who develop varicose veins because of obesity issues, it is very important for them to start losing weight through eating a proper diet and exercising.

Ironically, exercise is also another potential cause of these kinds of veins. This is because many women who want to get toned and lose weight as soon as possible start running or exercising their legs in an extreme manner. First of all, it is very important for a woman to gradually build up her tolerance for exercise. Additionally, the woman should wear supportive athletic footwear when exercising.

Speaking of footwear, long periods of time spent walking or standing on high heels can also cause these kinds of veins, because circulation in the legs becomes hindered. Although these kinds of veins are considered to be, because of their ugly appearance, more of a cosmetic nuisance, sometimes they can be indicative of something more serious.

For example, if the leg on which these kinds of veins occur is frequently stiff and painful, that could be indicative of a clot. Sometimes, a rash can also develop around these veins, which in turn could cause ulceration. If either of these symptoms are present, it is important for the woman to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
