Eliminate Surface Varicose Veins with Microphlebectomy

Updated on: August 18, 2014

In Yonkers, New York and around the country, patients have sought effective ways of getting rid of their varicose veins or spider veins. Through carefully designed treatments, many physicians have provided relief to those suffering from these venous conditions. Patients with small varicose veins or spider veins often turn to sclerotherapy for treatment, while patients suffering from larger varicose veins may choose other treatments. For those stuck in the middle, microphlebectomy has helped patients find relief from varicose veins too large for treatment with sclerotherapy, but not large enough for treatment with certain laser procedures.

This treatment has also been referred to as 'stab phlebectomy'. It is done on an outpatient basis and is minimally invasive in nature. Only a local anesthetic is required in performing microphlebectomy, whereas surgical procedures may require a general anesthetic. This procedure may even be used in conjunction with sclerotherapy. Patients should speak with a medical professional to discuss combining treatments, however. Very little downtime, if any at all, is required after this treatment. Proper recovery and any required downtime should be discussed with a qualified physician.

To begin this procedure, the physician will mark off the areas of the vein where tiny incisions will be made later. This provides more efficient service in many cases. The local anesthetic is then applied to ensure patient comfort during this procedure. Once the area has been marked and the anesthetic applied, a series of tiny incisions are made along the vein and a vein hook is used to remove the portion of the vein causing problems, leaving the rest of the vein to clot off, thus eliminating the ugly bulging appearance of the varicose veins. This procedure typically lasts around 30 to 45 minutes.

Patients are often able to return to work or other daily routines immediately following microphlebectomy. While strenuous activities are to be avoided for about a week after the procedure, patients are often encouraged to walk daily to promote healthy blood flow. Compression stockings may be recommended to be worn for about a week after the procedure to help aid in healing and promote blood flow as well.

Results become more evident once the initial bruising from the procedure resolves, although some patients notice results not long after the procedure. Since the incisions required for this procedure are so small, patients do not experience scarring as a result. For a day or two after treatment, patients may notice some minor discomfort at the treatment site. In rare cases, patients may notice minor injury to the nerves just beneath the skin near the treatment area, although this usually resolves itself with time. Patients should discuss all possible risks and complications with medical professional for more information.

To best avoid possible complications, patients should locate a reputable vein clinic in the Yonkers area whose medical staff is thoroughly trained and experienced. This may help to reduce the risk of avoidable complications. Before selecting any treatment, patients should explore all of their options to ensure they receive the proper treatment.
