ELVeS and Its Effect on Varicose Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Individuals with varicose veins in the Palm Harbor, Florida area have found relief through several different treatments and procedures. One such procedure is ELVeS, which stands for Endo Laser Vein System. This procedure uses laser light to constrict the vein walls, which directs blood flow to other veins in the area, thus improving circulation and relieving the problematic varicose veins. This is an outpatient procedure that is performed in a doctor's office or surgery center, and is only minimally-invasive. A local anesthetic is used during the procedure for patient comfort throughout.

Ultrasound is used to identify the problem veins that are to be treated, followed by the administration of the local anesthetic for patient comfort. Then an IV is started and the laser fiber is introduced through it into the vein. The doctor will insert the laser fiber into the vein, and the laser light will close off the damaged parts of the vein. The specialist will monitor the path of the laser energy on the screen for efficient care. The water in the blood and the cells in the vein wall will absorb the laser energy, which causes the veins to heat and collapse. Surrounding tissue is not harmed during the procedure.

After the procedure, a compression garment is applied and the patient will be asked to walk around the doctor's office. Recovery is quick and easy in most cases. After about twenty minutes, the patient will be allowed to leave. They may then return to work and other activities, but should avoid strenuous activities and exercise. Compression stockings should be worn for about a week after the procedure. Patients may notice a pulling sensation after the procedure, but over-the-counter medication is generally used to relieve this. Patients should ask their doctor before taking any medicine, though.

ELVeS has a high rate of success, but patients should consult the Palm Harbor vein specialist to make sure they are a good candidate for treatment. The procedure offers almost instant relief from varicose veins, and once the treatment site heals the bulging veins should go away as well. The skin should appear normal after the area heals. Risks include blood clots and numbness in the treatment area. Side effects are rare, however, and most specialists use a cooling system when applying laser treatment. Some have reported permanent numbness in a small portion of the treatment area.
