Microphlebectomy and Its Satisfied Customers

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Individuals in Largo, Florida and around the country have found relief from varicose veins through a variety of treatments and procedures. One of those treatments is microphlebectomy, which works by removing portions of problematic veins through tiny incisions that are made along the vein. Vein hooks are used to remove the problematic portions of the varicose veins. Patients who are suffering from these unsightly veins that appear bulging from the skin's surface and often appear bluish or purplish in color should consult a vein specialist to determine which treatments may provide them the best results.

Patients should discuss their candidacy for the procedure, as not all individuals are considered good candidates. However, most with problematic spider veins or varicose veins are considered candidates for microphlebectomy. The procedure is minimally-invasive, requires only a local anesthetic, and can be used along with sclerotherapy when treating deeper veins. There is little to no downtime required and most patients are allowed to resume normal activities immediately following treatment.

The procedure begins with the specialist determining where to make the tiny incisions, also called 'stabs'. The treatment area is then numbed using a local anesthetic, and the incisions are made in the predetermined areas along the vein. A vein hook then grabs the vein for removal. With the procedure completed, a dressing is applied to the site. The microphlebectomy procedure typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes to perform start to finish, although this varies.

After the procedure, most are able to resume their normal activities or return to work right away. Patients are encouraged to walk daily, but should avoid any strenuous activities for about a week after treatment. Compression stockings may be worn during the first week after the procedure to aid the healing process. The results are usually visible immediately after the procedure, and become more visible as the bruising subsides after treatment. Only very small incisions are made, so there is virtually no scarring with microphlebectomy.

As with any procedure, there are certain risks of which patients should be aware. Some feel temporary mild discomfort and bruising for a couple of days around the treatment site, and a small number of individuals experience minor injury to the tiny nerves that are located just below the skin's surface in the treatment area. The injured nerves usually heal with time, though. Insurance may only cover the cost of treatment is used with a larger procedure addressing varicose veins that are of a medical concern. Otherwise, insurance companies may not cover the cost of treatment. This is something that should be discussed prior to the procedure with a vein specialist in the Largo area.
