Microphlebectomy, or 'Stab Phlebectomy', Treats Varicose Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

For many patients in El Paso, Texas suffering from varicose veins, finding treatment is a personal priority. There are several minimally-invasive treatment options designed to help patients find relief from the embarrassing appearance of the condition, as well as the pain and heaviness many experience in the legs as a result of varicose veins. Microphlebectomy is a treatment that involves the use of tiny incisions through which problem veins may be removed. Many with veins that are too large for sclerotherapy but too small for laser procedures may find this procedure helpful.

A series of tiny injections about the size of a ballpoint pen tip is used to remove portions of the problem veins. The physician first marks the treatment area so that he or she knows where to make the tiny incisions or stabs. A local anesthetic is used to numb the treatment area for patient comfort during the procedure, and the El Paso vein specialist will proceed by making a few tiny incisions along the portion of the vein that is being removed. A vein hook is used to grab the vein for removal. A dressing is applied to the treatment area after the procedure. The treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes to perform in most cases.

Patients are usually able to return to work right after treatment and should walk daily to help aid in the healing process. However, patients should follow any instructions given to them by the El Paso vein specialist and should avoid strenuous activities in the first week or so. Patients should wear compression stockings for about a week or so after microphlebectomy. The results of this procedure may begin to become evident shortly after the procedure and should only continue to improve as the bruising subsides. With only tiny incisions used to perform the treatment, most patients heal with virtually no scarring present.

Patients may feel temporary and mild discomfort and bruising for a few days after the treatment around the treatment area. Some experience injury to the tiny nerves that are located beneath the surface of the skin in the treatment area. The injured nerves should heal with time, however. Insurance may cover the cost of treatment if used as part of a larger procedure to treat varicose veins that lead to medical concerns. Patients should consult a specialist as well as their insurance company to help determine if treatment will be covered.
