Recovering After ELVeS Treatment for Varicose Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Those who are in the Edwards, Colorado area or in other parts of the state or country and who are experiencing varicose veins often turn to minimally-invasive treatment options such as ELVeS to find relief. This is a procedure that uses laser light energy to constrict vein walls so that blood flow is directed to other, healthier veins in the area. It is a non-surgical approach to treatment and the recovery process reflects that. Recovering from this procedure is quick and is relatively pain-free. Patients who are suffering from the bulging, purplish or bluish varicose veins are encouraged to speak with a vein specialist regarding ELVeS to determine if the procedure is right for them.

ELVeS is an outpatient procedure that is minimally-invasive. The first step is for the specialist to identify the damaged veins using ultrasound technology. The treatment area is then numbed using a local anesthetic so the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure. An IV is then started through which the laser may be inserted into the vein. While using ultrasound for guidance, the specialist will then insert the fiber into the vein and properly position the laser so that it closes the damaged part of the vein. The water in the blood and cells on the vein wall absorb the energy from the laser, which causes the vein to heat up and collapse. Surrounding tissue is not damage during this treatment.

After ELVeS, a compression garment is usually applied and the patient will probably be asked to walk around the doctor's office before they leave. The patient may then return to work or resume other normal activities immediately after treatment, but should avoid strenuous activities. There may be a pulling sensation in the leg present for about a week after treatment, but over-the-counter pain medicine may be helpful in alleviating this side effect. Before taking any medicine, though, patients should check with their Edwards vein specialist.

There are certain risks of which patients should be aware before seeking treatment. State of the art cooling systems are used while treating veins with ELVeS, so there is little risk involved. Patients are nevertheless encouraged to speak with an Edwards vein specialist about possible risks and complications prior to treatment. There is a small risk of blood clots following treatment, and patients may feel some numbness in the treated area. Numbness usually disappears over time, although some have reported permanent numbness in a part of the treatment area.

Candidates for this procedure include those who have leaky superficial veins on the legs, although patients should speak with a specialist regarding their candidacy prior to receiving any treatment. Insurance companies will usually cover the cost of treatment when the varicose veins in question are considered a medical concern and have symptoms that come with them. It is still a good idea to consult the vein specialist as well as your insurance company before receiving treatment to check if the procedure will be covered.
