Traverse City Vein Treatment

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Both spider and varicose vein treatments are now available in Traverse City. In the last decade, a number of physicians and other health care professionals offer a wide variety of vein treatments in this small town.

Among the vein disorders, both spider and varicose veins are a common source of distress among the individuals living in Traverse City and nearby surrounding areas. The latest treatments for these two conditions include:

Spider veins

Sclerotherapy: This older procedure is still available at many clinics. The procedure requires the injection of a chemical which selectively destroys the spider vein. Unfortunately, it does require the use of a needle and each spider vein has to be injected separately. After the procedure, the individual will have the legs wrapped in some type of compression garment. The procedure does effectively rid of spider veins but when the chemical leaks out or is injected in the nearby skin, it can cause moderate darkening of the skin.

Laser: Laser is now a routine treatment for spider veins of both the legs and face. Hand held laser probes can quickly erase spider veins in very little time. Most individuals undergoing spider vein treatments need 2-3 sessions to completely eradicate the majority of spider veins. Unfortunately, neither technique can cure spider veins and recurrences in different areas are still a problem.

Varicose veins

There are a variety of treatment options for varicose veins and the best treatment is individualized after the initial consultation. The treatment is dependent on the location and degree of varicose veins. The most commonly used procedures to treat varicose veins include:

Stripping:
Under genera anesthesia, the entire vein is stripped from the ankle to the groin. After the procedure, compression stockings are worn for a few days to limit the bruising and swelling.

Endovenous laser: This laser based procedure is the latest for the treatment of varicose veins which are located in the thigh area. The probe is inserted into the vein and slowly burnt away. There is minimal pain and recovery is rapid. Another similar procedure uses radiofrequency ablation to destroy the vein. Both procedures are rapidly replacing older methods of treating varicose veins.

For those undecided about surgery, compression stockings may be an option.
