How many ultrasounds post EVLT are appropriate? The vein center I had my pre-op consultation suggests 3 post op US exams.

I have varicose veins, and I developed some swelling and superficial clots in my leg, so I went to a vein center associated with the hospital for a consultation. After the visit, they went over the EVLT procedure, and also handed me their literature. They want to do post EVLT ultrasounds at 1 week, 4 weeks and 8 weeks. That seems excessive to me, and I'm on a high deductible plan, so much of this will likely be out of pocket. Could I get by with only having 1, at 4 weeks for example?

First US is within 1st week, second in 3 weeks, and if all is OK, there is no need for further tests unless symptoms recur.

It is standard of care to follow-up for up to 3 months. This varies from surgeon to surgeon. I typically see my patients at one week, 6 weeks and before 3 months if indicated. We do not charge our patients up to 3 months.

In our opinion, that is absolutely excessive. We do a postop ultrasound at 48 to 72 hours to rule out any complications. There is no need to have any further ultrasound after that, it is simply greed. The only exception to that might be if you need an additional ambulatory phlebectomy procedure in which case some insurance companies will require another ultrasound prior.

My policy is to do ONE completion ultrasound usually within one week of the procedure and then I recommend a follow up ultrasound one year later.

I had EVLT about 2-3 weeks ago and I'm still experiencing sharp pain. It's mostly when I stand or walk. Even when I wear a compression stocking during standing or walking, there is no relief.
