Incision sites filling up with blood and bursting 5 months after EVLT/ambulatory phlebectomy. What should I do?

I had EVLT/ambulatory phlebectomy on both legs five months ago. Recovery went well at first, but after about six weeks my incision sites frequently began swelling up with blood and occasionally erupting. There are also hard sensitive lumps under the sites, and they are sensitive to the touch. There is minor discoloration too. I have consulted two different surgeons and neither seem to know what the problem is. Any ideas what this may be and how I can speed up the recovery process?

What you are experiencing is a side effect from what you had done 5 months ago. What a lot of physicians do not understand is that performing EVLT and phlebectomy by themselves, does not address most patient's vein issues. For instance, if you say you have 50 yards of abnormal vein structure in your legs, the procedures that you had done probably would have addressed a few feet of that 50 yards. Everything else in the eyes of your doc is "cosmetic." In reality, there is nothing cosmetic about vein disease. Whether you are talking about a spider vein or a reticular vein or a ropey vein, they are all dysfunctional, which results in a venous flow problem. This is why vein disease is a circulation issue. Cosmetic issues do not affect circulation. The swelling and discoloration you are experiencing is from trapped blood forming. If they are close enough to the skin, they can erupt. They are caused when blood finds its way into an end pocket and gets trapped. Because the treatment that you had does not eliminate all of the branches that were feeding into the veins that you had removed, your vein structure is still trying to feed into these closed ends. The result is what you have. It can easily be fixed, but you need to find a doc who actually understands veins and how to treat your entire venous network. Only then will your complaints resolve.

The hard, sensitive areas under phlebectomy sites are often scar tissue and sometimes a small trapped nerve. I would encourage you to massage (pinpoint with the tip of finger) the sites several times a day, using a cream for healing and bruising (i.e. Dermaka or Arnica). This will help soften the scar tissue and desensitize any little nerves in the area. Without seeing you for the areas which you claim erupt, it is difficult to advise. It sounds unusual. Discoloration can occur and typically will fade with time. The massage creams should help. You are still in the healing process.

I had EVLT about 2-3 weeks ago and I'm still experiencing sharp pain. It's mostly when I stand or walk. Even when I wear a compression stocking during standing or walking, there is no relief. But if I don't wear the stocking, it feels like my vein is exploding. I checked with my vascular surgeon and he said I have a clot. What should I do? Is there any way to get the pain to subside? NSAIDs are not helping. Is it possible to remove the clot? If so, will the pain go away then?

I went to have my 6 month ultrasound after having both legs treated with endovenous laser ablation. According to my doctor, there is still trapped blood below my right knee. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? I completely regret doing this. :(

I clearly needed post-EVLT microphlebectomy or sclerotherapy. Why would I have to wait six months to be re-evaluated, when my legs clearly are not improved cosmetically? I feel that it should be done as soon as possible. What are your recommendations?
