The nurse who has been injecting my reticular and spider veins now won't treat the reticulars. Any advice?

A nurse has been injecting my reticular veins and spider veins. This time around, she said she will only inject the spider veins. I'm not comfortable with this as I believe the reticular veins are feeding my spider veins. I had a Doppler ultrasound (she used the small handheld device) where she checked to see if there were any underlying vein issues and said there was none. I’m not convinced. I require another 2 - 3 treatments after this. Advice?

I would suggest when you get another ultrasound, if you see the veins that she is saying are closed, if they are blinking when compressed then those are open veins. If the vein does not blink when compressed that means that there is no flow to the vein. The medication used with the injections takes time to completely close the veins. You should notice the closed (non-blinking) veins disappear or shrink in about 6-8 weeks and should be completely gone in about 4-5 months.

I would see a vein specialist for an evaluation. A hand-held Doppler cannot determine the status of the saphenous vein valves. If you have underlying reflux, this may be the cause of your veins. Also, I agree that treating the feeding reticular veins is an essential component of the treatment.

A handheld Doppler is not adequate for a standard venous insufficiency study. Look for a board-certified vascular surgeon who will be able to provide comprehensive treatment and a standard diagnostic ultrasound if symptoms are present.
