Can a pelvic venogram affect my fertility?

I have varicose veins at age 41. I had stripping on my leg and 15 years ago, the varicose veins returned. My vein doctor says I need a pelvic venogram before doing any laser vein removal, and thinks I have pelvic congestion (but I have no symptoms). I just had a miscarriage last month and am eager to try again. I'm afraid that the pelvic venogram/coil will affect my fertility. Is this the case?

I don't think it will affect your fertility, but if you have no symptoms I would just treat the varicose veins for now.

I disagree with your doctor. He should treat your leg veins as these are what are bothering you. I've sent patients for coil embolization to multiple radiologists at multiple facilities and quit sending them years ago. I never had a single patient notice any improvement in a any way after the embolizations. He should start by treating your leg veins and only consider sending you for venogram if you don't respond.

If you have no symptoms, you do not have pelvic congestion syndrome and do not need intervention. Varicose veins recur after strippings, which were often incomplete or ineffective due to lack of ultrasound guidance.

There are other studies that can be done, such as ultrasound or MRI. They can determine the diagnosis without use of radiation.

The venogram by itself should not affect your fertility. To be sure, you must confirm that you are not pregnant at the time of the study.

Go see a vascular surgeon who is a vein specialist. The ultrasound will help your doctor provide a diagnosis and plan for treatment.
