I have a small vein that is still bulging six weeks after sclerotherapy. Is this normal?

I had a small bulging vein treated six weeks ago with sclerotherapy and it still shows. I had bigger veins treated last year and was happy with the results. My legs looked great and the scans were great too. This vein is supposedly a residual vein. It's only a small one, but I wanted it gone. Should it not have decreased in size or disappeared by now? Will I need another round? I'm scheduled for an appointment in February.

After sclerotherapy, a vein can take weeks to months before it disappears. During this time, the treated vein is usually firm and not compressible, as it was before treatment. If the vein is completely unchanged weeks to months after treatment, it may require additional treatment. Your physician will be able to assess this need.

It is not unusual to require multiple rounds of sclerotherapy to complete treatment.

Residual varicose veins after a treatment may require stab phlebectomy or sclerotherapy.

It's hard to say if the vein is completely closed without an exam. In general, larger veins tend to take longer to get absorbed. I would keep the appointment scheduled for February.

The appearance of bulging vein depends on the size of vein being treated. Sclerotherapy is good for smaller sized veins, and phlebectomy is the preferred mode of treatment for larger veins bulging under the skin. If the treated vein has not disappeared after one session of sclerotherapy, you may need another session or two. If the vein is large in size, you can discuss the option of phlebectomy with your treating physician.

Often times veins may need a few sessions to go away completely. Sometimes they need to go up on the solution or just treat it again.

The vein is either treated and has not resolved, or it was not adequately treated. At six weeks, I would follow up with your treating physician. It may need to be evacuated of blood or retreated.
