I have five more endovenous laser ablation procedures scheduled. How can I control my anxiety while under local anesthesia?

I had one in six endovenous laser ablation procedures. Yes, there is some pain and discomfort, but that was not the biggest problem. I am very aware of my body all the time, and anesthesia helped with the pain, not with horrible waves of anxiety. I honestly do not feel like undergoing five more of these procedures while being conscious. The anxiety was choking me during the procedure, and many hours after, it felt like an aggression that had to stop. What are my options?

I'm sorry, but you don't need 6 ablations. Someone is taking advantage of you!

You can talk to your physician about prescribing an anxiolytic prior to the procedure to see if this takes the edge off. These are medications like Ativan, Valium, halcion, etc.

I believe the bigger question is why you need 5-6 ablation procedures. This is highly uncommon in epidemiology to suggest 6 vessels are diseased in a given individual. There are concerns about general anesthesia, yet if you are in an academic setting, you may find more can be done with you under general anesthesia that will help you avoid the anxiety.

Step #1: Consider a second opinion to verify the need for such excessive treatment. (Again, this is quite unusual)
Step #2: Consider a facility which offers general anesthesia.

I typically do not treat with anxiolytics, but your primary care doctor can prescribe Valium or Xanax to take an hour before your procedures. Someone has to drive you to the office and drive you home if you take this class of medication.
