At Flower Mound Vein Center we offer a complete medical and ultrasound evaluation for diagnosis of any venous abnormalities and subsequent treatment with EVLT, Sclerotherapy, and/or Ambulatory Phlebectomy techniques. Venous insufficiency is diagnosed when the valves in the superficial veins of the legs become nonfunctional, allowing blood to pool in the legs or even become reversed (reflux) and flow towards the feet instead of back towards the heart. Venous insufficiency is often associated with symptoms of pain, heaviness, aching, swelling, and sometimes skin changes around the ankles which can lead to skin ulceration over time. Venous insufficiency has also recently been associated with “restless leg syndrome”.
EVLT (EndoVenous Laser Therapy) is indicated when there is reflux in the greater or lesser saphenous veins, or occasionally in one of the superficial tributary veins. EVLT is a 45 minute procedure performed under local anesthesia in the office. A small catheter is inserted into the offending vein using ultrasound guidance and a thin laser fiber is then placed through the catheter. After the administration of tumescent anesthesia around the vein, the laser is activated and pulled slowly through the vein to close the vein. After the procedure, an ACE bandage and a special compression stocking are placed on the leg. The vein will then resorb over time. There is no hospitalization after the procedure and there is minimal recovery time at home.
Sclerotherapy is used for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. A dilute chemical detergent is injected into the veins with a very thin needle. This causes the inner lining of the vein to become irritated and collapse which results in no blood flow within the injected vein. A form a sclerotherapy called “foam sclerotherapy” uses a mixture of chemical sclerosant and air to allow slightly larger veins to be treated with this method.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is performed under local anesthesia in our office. Larger superficial varicose veins are removed through tiny skin nicks along the course of the vein to provide relief of any symptoms caused by the vein as well as an excellent cosmetic result.
