Laser Treatment for Spider Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

As your skin ages it begins to thin, this process allows veins to become more prominent. Some of these unsightly veins are called spider veins and these spider veins can be corrected. Laser treatment for spider veins can eliminate the veins without damaging your fragile skin.

Laser treatment spider veins or laser treatment for spider veins is a practical choice for treating those annoying and unsightly veins that seem to show up out of the blue. For most people spider veins are not a problem and they opt to have them treated strictly for visual purposes.

Because of this reason, most laser treatment for spider veins is not covered by insurance. But you should discuss this with your vein doctor and your insurance agent to determine what, if any, of the spider vein laser treatment cost can be covered.

Laser treatment for spider veins is also available for outpatient treatment of your varicose veins. This procedure utilizes ultrasound technology. A thin laser fiber is tenderly slid into your vein through a tiny slit and delivers pulsed laser heat to the injured vein wall.

Endovenous laser or EVLT treatment openly attacks the lumen of the blood vessel, closing off the damaged area and redirecting the flow of blood to other veins in the leg.

EVLT lasts 45 minutes and is done as an outpatient, in most instances right in your doctor's office using a local anesthetic. The energy from the laser attacks the vein walls, shrinking them and closing the defective vein so that the blood cannot flow through it. This eliminates any bulging from the vein right at its source. Once the vein has been treated, the blood from the defective vein is diverted to the normal veins that are in your leg.

After Laser Treatment Spider Veins

After laser treatment for spider veins you can drive yourself home, can carry on with your usual activities and will be encouraged to walk. You should wear support hosiery or compression wraps to protect the treated vessels. After treatment, do not take aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours. Tylenol may be used if needed. You are encouraged not to take hot baths or sit in a whirlpool or sauna, nor apply hot compresses or any form of heat to the injected areas for 48 hours after treatment. It will be recommended that you stay away from direct exposure to sunlight, sun bathing and tanning beds, jogging, high-impact aerobics and swimming for 1-2 weeks following treatment.
