Varicose Veins: What Are Their Causes?

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Both men and women place a lot of emphasis on how their legs look, albeit for completely different reasons. Men, for example, are more interested in how muscular their legs are, while women want their legs to look not too skinny, but not too fat, either. Another thing that women place an emphasis on is making sure that their legs look as flawless as they can, because smooth legs honestly look so much better in various outfits! All kidding aside, however, for many women, the clearer their legs look, the better their self esteem is.

Unfortunately, things like varicose veins can happen on the legs as well. While some men have been known to get these kinds of veins, it is more often associated with women. However, a woman should not panic when she sees varicose veins on her leg. Rather, she should investigate what might have caused this kind of vein to appear in the first place.

Varicose veins are indeed not the most attractive things in the world, but they are at least instantly recognizable. Their puffy appearance is considerably raised up off of the skin, and their color is usually any combination of blue, green, or dark purple. They also are usually most prevalently found on the lower legs.

As for the causes of varicose veins, one of the main ones involves a significant amount of weight gain over a short period of time. Of course, this could be from eating lots of unhealthy food, but at the same time a major cause could be weight gain from pregnancy.

The legs are not, after all, just comprised of a bunch of bones and muscles. Rather, there is also a complex network of veins that carry blood to and from the heart. When a lot of weight is gained, more pressure is put on the legs that have to carry this extra weight around. So, the veins start to swell in order to allow the blood to successfully pass through.

This kind of pressure is placed on the legs not just because of weight gain, but also because of, ironically, exercise. If exercise is done wearing the wrong kind of footwear, then that will automatically become the impetus for circulatory problems. So, ladies, the next time you are working out at the gym with your special gel soled athletic sneakers, make sure you tell the woman next to you wearing tennis shoes on the treadmill that she really should rethink her footwear. It might seem rude, but actually you will be doing her a favor.

Something else that women should avoid doing on a regular basis is (gasp!) wearing high heels. Yes, high heels make for an excellent fashion statement, but any fashionable woman knows that they hurt the feet. They also hurt the circulation, so it is best to wear them only in moderation.

Weight gain and fashion aside, these kinds of veins can sometimes be more than the cosmetic nuisances that they are generally thought to be. So, if the woman starts feeling a considerable amount of pain and stiffness in the leg where these veins are located, then it is very important for her to see a doctor as soon as possible.
