Veinwave and Thermocoagulation to Treat Spider Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Veinwave is a procedure designed for the treatment of spider veins that has helped patients in Union, New Jersey and in other parts of the nation overcome this venous condition in a safe, effective manner. Thermocoagulation is used with this procedure to safely treat spider veins or telangiectasia (small dilated blood vessels) on various parts of the body.

Thermocoagulation may sound like an intimidating term, but it is actually fairly simple to understand. High-frequency electric current is used to produce heat that destroys tissue. Only in Veinwave, the vein wall is heated so that it closes the vessel and blood is no longer able to flow through it. The procedure was designed to treat veins that are too small to treat with sclerotherapy.

The procedure is performed by first cleaning the injection site. A very fine, insulated needle is then used by the vein specialist to administer the treatment subepidermally. The vessel itself is not pierced, however. The tiny vessels are destroyed and disappear quickly. There are no bandages required afterwards and each procedure typically lasts about 15 minutes. Results are visible immediately and should improve over the course of the next few days. The treatment is permanent, so veins that are treated with Veinwave will no longer be visible.

Most patients with spider veins or telangiectasia are considered candidates for this procedure, although certain medical conditions may exclude some patients. This may include patients who are epileptic, those with bleeding disorders, those with pacemakers and women who are pregnant. For more information, patients should consult a vein specialist in the community.

No downtime is required following the procedure, and most patients are able to return to work immediately. Although there is a very small risk of scarring, the risk is much less than that associated with other procedures designed to relieve spider veins. Still, patients are encouraged to discuss the risk with a vein specialist in the Union community.

Veinwave offers several advantages over other procedures designed to reach the same results. For starters, the procedure is very minimally-invasive. It does not require downtime and no bandages are required afterwards. Also, patients are not required to miss work following Veinwave, as most resume normal daily activities immediately following treatment. There is no bruising with this procedure, less pain and areas like the knees, ankles and face may be treated with Veinwave.

In most cases, insurance companies consider this a cosmetic procedure and do not cover it. However, in cases where spider veins occur with varicose veins, the procedure may be covered. For more specific information on a case by case basis, patients should consult a vein specialist and their insurance company to determine if the procedure will be covered.

The cost of this procedure largely depends on the size of the area being treated, although most procedures run between $400 and $800. This may vary, however, and patients should inquire about pricing with the specific clinic in the Union, New Jersey area.
