It's been 2 years since my endovenous laser ablation. My foot continues to swell and I have severe nerve damage from my ankle to my mid-calf. The doctor I saw has been NO help. I cannot exercise or walk long distances. I'm only 29! This can't be normal. Is there anything that can be done to resolve these problems? Suggestions?
It sounds like you have saphenous nerve injury and also lymphatic swelling.

Two years is a long time. The nerve issues should be studied with EMG studies done through a neurologist to see the extent, if any, of possible injuries. The persistent swelling requires a thorough evaluation by a vascular surgeon and a full ultrasound to check for any vein issues that will need to be dealt with.

We are sorry you are having such problems after your procedure and hope you can find a physician you are comfortable working with. Since you are having swelling, we would recommend you have a lower extremity ultrasound to see if the etiology of the swelling can be determined. The nerve damage may need to be evaluated by a neurologist to help guide a treatment plan.

You need a full treatment of possible multiple ablations, ambulatory phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy. It is always a risk of nerve damage after procedures, but done properly, usually the damage is minimal and can heal after time. Do find a doctor who is accredited and he or she should be a better help to you. Typically, Interventional Radiologists are the doctors who do these procedures the best.

You should be evaluated by a neurologist regarding the nerve problem and get an opinion from a board certified vascular trained surgeon who specializes in varicose veins. None of what you describe is considered normal.

Sorry you are not doing better, this is NOT typical following treatment. It never hurts to have a second opinion or discuss with your general provider to make sure there isn't another unrelated issue causing your symptoms.

I am confused. You speak of nerve damage near the ankle. Ablations rarely go below the knee especially with laser. So I'm assuming he treated from the knee to the groin but without knowing more details that's difficult to say.
Nerve damage doesn't travel in the sense that when it occurs it is very local to the area that is treated. So I doubt it's related to the ablation. However, you have a condition combined with the foot swelling that should be looked at especially at your age. Would suggest you see a good, experienced vascular surgeon, who works with a really good vascular lab that has only registered vascular techs (RVTs) to do a thorough vein mapping and find out what's causing what the sources of the swelling. That vein mapping should take at least 25-30 minutes per leg if it's done properly. It may not be Venous related, but something else.

It sounds like your ELT damaged your saphenous nerve. That is why you have the numbness in and around you ankle and or calf. Given that you had the procedure two years ago, your numbness is unfortunately probably permanent. That said, normally nerve damage from ELT is normally not as bad as you are reporting. That suggests that you may have other vein issues that were probably never properly addressed two years ago.

The swelling can be symptomatically treated with compression stockings, lymphedema massage and lymphedema segmental compression sleeves. Physical therapy may help your leg muscle strength to improve your walking and exercise ability. There is not much that can be done for a nerve injury 2 years out. You may want to see neurologist for this.
