EVT after varicose vein surgery

I had varicose vein surgery (ligation and stripping) 10 years ago. My problems came back and I've had many rounds of sclerotherapy. Now my doctor recommends EVT. Is that OK?

Quite often patients need thermal ablation (EVLT, endovenous laser treatment or RFA, radiofrequency ablation) few years after venous stripping and/or ligation. It is safe and reasonable to do if you, like many patients, have recurrent symptoms.

I would need to examine you and do an ultrasound to be able to tell you. I would suggest a second opinion.

It can be a good option in some cases of recurrent veins. It depends on the cause of your recurrent veins.

We often see patients who have had previous strippings presenting with similar problems. This surgery was the only available treatment then and was "Blind" procedure without ultrasound guidance. If you have had a thorough evalution by your vascular surgeon, you may have saphenous incompetence, accessory or a duplicate saphenous insufficiency which can be treated successfully with endovenous laser ablation.

If you have reflux and if the problematic veins can accommodate the laser then EVT is indicated.
