How does this treatment measure my veins effectiveness?
A venous reflux exam is testing to see if there is abnormal venous blood flow. This is a very specific test that is obtained when a physician is working up specific symptoms such as, leg pain, leg heaviness, leg pressure or patients with darkened damaged skin and/or ulcers-sores. If you have none of these symptoms then it would be unlikely to require a reflux venous ultrasound.

Venous reflux exam is tyically by ultrasound. This should be done in standing position for the superficial systems and will show if the valves are intact. The vein valves keep the blood flowing back to the heart for "cleansing and reoxygenation. When the calf/thigh muscles pump, the blood is pushed up. When the muscles relax, in normal veins, the valves close preventing the back flow of blood. If the valves are "broken" and don't close, the blood falls back causing increased pressure, varicose veins and symptoms such as pain, heaviness, aching, cramping, RLS, skin changes, etc.

A venous reflux examination evaluates whether or not veins have malfunctioning valves and, if they do, the severity in seconds of the malfunctioning (called reflux). Reflux is the number one cause of varicose veins and needs to be treated first before the varicose veins are addressed.

The most common type of reflux exam is duplex ultrasound, which can detect the direction of vein blood flow ( up is normal, down towards legs suggests reflux and weakness) as well as "Valve Closure Time", a parameter that quantifies degree of reflux if it is present. With the ultrasound, specific veins are examined to put together a map of the venous circulation of you leg. The results of the reflux exam should tell which veins are working properly and which are not and specifically where in the this occurs.

Normally blood is carried in lower extremity veins up towards the heart. The ultrasound looks for blood going in the wrong direction (reflux).

This test wil tell you if you have venous insufficiency, that is the hallmark of varicose vein disease. It is crucial in making the diagnosis of vein disease, the extent, severity and to help in delineating the tratment plan.

A reflux exam is simply an ultrasound test that is used to determine if the veins in your lege that you cannot see are working properly. That really all it is. But it is very important to complete this prior to tackling any issues related to your veins, whether they be big or small.

A venous reflux exam is an ultrasound. What this ultrasound does is it looks for incompetent valves in your veins. Typically, if that is found, it also means that your veins reflux. By reflux, we mean that the blood is not flowing in the proper upward direction, it is pooling in you legs. This pooling causes varicose veins.
