An ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test to determine if a condition exists and, if so, if it needs treatment and what type. A vein mapping is done as a pre-operative procedure to determine if a vein is adequate to use for either a lower extremity bypass or an AV fistula.

Vein mapping employs ultrasound scanning to determine the extent and nature of the procedure that needs to be done. They're the same thing if they are done for the express purpose of planning the ablation.

Ultrasound can be done for many reasons and in may areas such as gall bladder, kidney, etc. Venous ultrasound looks at the veins and can look at many different kinds of veins. When used to identify the anatomy of the saphenous vein in preparation for a closure procedure or for harvesting prior to heart bypass, it is called vein mapping.
