How do I know it's the right time to have vein ablation treatment?

I had a vein ultrasound and although there were no signs of thrombosis, I seem to have 1 long vein in each leg that isn't working properly. Instead of the blood flowing in one direction, it is flowing in both. The MD recommended vein ablation and I did schedule it, but am now having second thoughts and concerns over secondary veins bulging after this treatment. Is it best to hold off on the ablation until it's absolutely necessary? The veins are deep under the skin and don't bother me too much.

It's simple. If you are not having significant or any symptoms, do not have treatment. It is quite reasonable to observe. In a year or two if you start having discomfort or swelling that is bothering you, then you can get another ultrasound to see what is happening and then get treatment.

There are normally two reasons my patients seek treatment. They do not like the way their legs look or their legs hurt. Please note that not everyone recognizes that their legs are symptomatic because the symptoms can come on so gradually. Usually if you are having any of the following symptoms, an if you have no other obvious cause for them, then they are probably vein related (itching, burning, leg cramping, restless legs, heaviness). You also need to be aware that since vein disease is normally an inherited disorder, it is highly unlikely that only one vein in each leg is affected. If your doc is telling you that, then you really should get a second opinion regarding what you have. I would look to speak to a doc who only does vein treatments.

Based on what you're saying, you're not ready. You said that your legs don't bother you, and if you're OK with how they look, then you don't have to do anything.
