I stand all day and have recently noticed a lot of pain in my lower legs. It looks like I might have spider veins. Can they cause pain?
Yes, spider veins can cause symptoms, typically itching or burning. I have had a few patients complain of more severe pain. These complaints will usually resolve with treatment.

Normally, spider veins will only cause localized discomfort (some burning, aching). If you are experiencing more extensive symptoms, then you should have a thorough evaluation, including an ultrasound examination, by an experienced board certified surgeon who specializes in venous issues. It may be possible that you have venous insufficiency. He/she will be able to direct you if this isn't the case. Compression hose may also help with your discomfort when standing and can be fitted when you are evaluated.

Traditionally there is the concept that spider veins do not cause pain. Interestingly enough, many patients feel their legs less tired and "achy" after they have their spider veins treated. On the other hand, spider veins might just represent a tip of an iceberg of having venous insufficiency that clearly gives leg pains and discomfort. You need an evaluation done by a Board Certified Phlebologist (vein specialist).

Generally, pain is caused by valvular problems in the deeper veins, not the spider veins.

Spider veins, veins less than 1 mm in diameter, rarely cause pain. However, failure of valves in veins under the skin resulting in venous insufficiency and high pressure in the veins with standing or sitting may cause pain. It is not uncommon for these failing veins to be located deep. You should see a vein specialist.

You may have underlying venous insufficiency that is more likely the cause of your pain and also causing the spider veins. See a vein specialist.

It certainly may be. You should be evaluated by a vein specialist who can evaluate and treat you, based on the findings. Something as straight forward as compression stockings may provide you with relief of pain.

Refluxing veins cause pain in the legs. It's very possible that you have refluxing veins that are feeding those spider veins. An ultrasound would determine if some of your bigger veins in your legs are refluxing and would need treatment.

Spider veins and reticular veins, contrary to popular belief can cause pain and discomfort in those people suffering from them. Depending on how much you have and where, can greatly effect what type of discomfort you may notice. Symptoms can range from aching, itching, heaviness, numbness, night cramping, and restless legs to name a few. The more vein disease a person has, the greater the venous circulatory deficiency that comes along with it. The result is a heavier, more tired leg that just happens to look bad too.

Very rarely will spider veins cause pain, though your spider veins should be treated regardless. Visit a local dermatologist, or doctor that specializes in the treatment of venous disorders (treatment of varicose and spider veins), to get tested for an arterial disease.

Spider Veins do not cause leg pain. You may however, have underlying venous reflux which could be contributing to your symptoms. I would recommend obtaining a venous reflux exam and evaluation by a vein specialist.
