Is it normal to feel pain three weeks after a Sclerotherapy injection?

I had a Sclerotherapy injection on my leg three weeks ago. Since I removed my compression stocking a week ago, I have had a constant pain on the inside of my thigh. It is also red and inflamed where the pain is coming from. Is this normal?

It is not normal, but not unusual. Resume wearing compression stockings for at least two weeks or longer if red/inflammation persists. Seek re-evaluation if it worsens or does not resolve with continual stocking use.

What you describe is not normal. There should be very little, if any, post-sclerotherapy pain. Inflammation and redness along the course of the vein suggests superficial phlebitis. You should follow up with your treating physician.

Sclerotherapy injections irritate the inner lining of veins. Some individuals are allergic to sulfa, the liquid compound in the solution. Rarely, some patients may develop an infection or thrombophlebitis of the vein. Consult your physician for proper evaluation.

The sclerotherapy can cause inflammation of larger veins under the skin, which causes the pain and redness. Time and ibuprofen will slowly correct the problem.

It may be possible that you have an area of "trapped blood." When the vein is injected, it causes some inflammation. However, if a larger varicose vein was injected, you may have a thrombophlebitis. In either case, you should be checked by your doctor and possibly have the vein drained. Low heat often, and anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen 2-3 times a day will help after it is drained. Injecting the solutions outside the vein can also cause such symptoms and possible skin damage.

It's possible you have retained blood or debris in a vessel that was closed. This can be treated by expressing the "coagulum." I recommend you see your treating physician. I also recommend you continue to wear your compression stocking -- this may help with the pain.
