Sclerotherapy solutions are safe in general. Saline solutions pose no risk to a breastfeeding infant. STS, if used, is cleared fairly quickly. Usually within a few hours. There are no standards established regarding breastfeeding and sclerotherapy.? But because it is cleared quickly, I recommend to nursing mothers that they pump the next 2 times their child would feed and discard the milk. They would supplement during this time of course. Then they may resume breast feeding.

We tell our patients that if you "pump and dump" for 24-48 hours after having injections, you will be fine. That is based off the information on the solution that we use (sodium tetradecyl sulfate), it may be different for other solutions. In addition, we were told that if there is still some of the solution in your system when you continue nursing, it should not be harmful to the baby. They may just not want to eat because it might taste "soapy" to them. If your physician is using a different solution, do not follow these recommendations.

While there are no established standards, I don't recommend undergoing sclerotherapy during pregnancy. In general, the solutions used are safe and cleared from the blood stream rapidly.

I would not recommend sclerotherapy while breast feeding. Although it may be safe, sclerotherapy is an elective procedure and there is no reason to add any unnecessary risk to the baby even if it is remote. Our basic philosophy is, "Above all, do no harm."
