Definitely wear compression stockings during your pregnancy. It will not harm your fetus and will improve your circulation. During pregnancy hormones dilate the blood vessels to carry extra blood for the baby. With a family history, this is when valves in veins may start to fail. Compression hose reduce that or can slow the process with future pregnancies. We recommend 20-30 mmHg strength for the first - second trimester and often increase to 30-40mmHg compression at the end of the second to third trimesters. It is important to get measured by an experienced fitter and purchase a good quality hose (Sigvaris or Bauerfeind), as they will be somewhat easier to put on and more comfortable. Inexpensive compression hose will just make you more miserable!! Their fabrics have less stretch.

Compression hose pose no danger to the fetus. Maternity panty hose have an
enlarged abdominal component which allows more space for the growth
throughout the pregnancy. The upside of pantyhose use during the 2nd and
third trimesters is significant, as they will help control edema in the legs
and slow the progression of varicose veins and other veins in the legs.

Wearing compression stockings during pregnancy up to the groin is safe. If you are wearing full panty hose then I would not recommend greater than 20mmHg compression.
