I am a 30 year old woman. I was diagnosed with greater saphenous vein reflux and want to know any drawbacks (long term as well) to venous closure.

I have a family history of varicose veins. I'm an active woman and noted the vein for aprox. 1 year (especially down at my outer ankle area, back of calf, and inner knee areas). I wear compression socks. My leg gets "heavy" and tired quickly and the ankle often feels "odd." I went to my primary doctor who did not think it was a "big" deal but did refer me to a specialist in the area. Right away he said "I can fix this" and then did ultrasound the next appointment. Is venous closure right for me?

Varicose veins are a progressive problem. You have veins and are symptomatic. If the ultrasound reveals nonfunctioning venous valves that are causing the problem then you would benefit from a closure procedure. A trial of medical management with support stockings for 3 months should be done. If you benefit from the stockings and do not want a procedure then you can continue with the stockings. If stockings do not help then closure should be performed.

If you have symptomatic vein reflux in the saphenous (long or short) this can be treated with endovenous laser ablation and the bulging varicose veins can be removed at the same setting (microphlebectomy). These are office-based procedures and typically covered by your insurance--no expensive hospital bills or long down time. All under local anesthetic.

Vein Treatment Clinic

It all depends on signs and symptoms, vein evaluation, and ultrasound results. A vein specialist is able to recommend the best treatment for you according to your ultrasound results and your specific goals. Your vein specialist may recommend a regular walking regimen and suggest to refrain from very heavy activity like lifting or prolonged standing for a few weeks following the vein treatment, as well as the use of medical compression stocking depending on the vein treatment that was used. There are vein treatments where the use of compression stocking is not necessary. There are other treatment options that do require the use of compression stockings for a week or so post procedure.
Without treatment of venous insufficiency, those with the disease may experience progressive symptoms like leg swelling, skin damage and ulcers that can debilitate and affect a great deal the quality of life; however that outcome is preventable with proper treatment. According to the type of treatment a patient may resume normal activities more quickly.
Thanks for your question and good luck!

Ijust had VNUS closure surgery 4 days ago and the pain is minimal. But, I did notice today it feels like there is a throbbing or heartbeat, almost like a twitching or pumping in my upper leg. It doesn't hurt. Is this normal? What's causing the pulsing/throbbing? Also, am I able to tan (tanning bed or stand up) if I wear my support hose so my leg is not directly exposed to the light, and if I don't use tanning lotion on the leg?? When will the fat, worm-like veins go down or look better?
