Why do I have a lump on my calf after laser vein removal?

I had laser vein removal three weeks ago. After one week I noticed a lump at the side of my calf. My surgeon drained the blood from it, but now the lump is back. What should I do?

Following laser vein ablation or microphlebectomies, blood can become trapped in the treated veins and 1 to 3 weeks later, this blood can get hard and feel tender. Wet heat to these areas and ibuprofen will help but draining the area expedites the healing. More than 1 draining may be necessary.

There is no such thing as laser vein removal so I'm not sure what procedure you had done. It sounds like it was a phlebectomy and the best thing is to return to your surgeon and have him check it.

It sounds like you may have trapped blood in a surface vein after a laser ablation. Most often this occurs in branches or varicose veins that are coming off the main trunk which was closed. If the blood has re-accumulated after your physician drained it, then you may need an alternate treatment such as sclerotherapy or ambulatory phlebectomy. Please go back to your treating physician for reevaluation.

You can go back and have the blood drained again, or you can use a warm pack or heating pad on it. It should go away with time.

If there was a dilated vein in the area, the blood flow decreased/stopped after your procedure. This can cause "trapped blood" which causes dilation and sometimes a little discomfort. Draining is effective and can take more than one treatment. If it continues to fill, it may need to be injected (sclerosed). Applying low heat often can relieve discomfort.
