I have calf muscle pain and cramping in my calf 1 week after EVLT, ambulatory phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy. Is this normal?

I had EVLT, ambulatory phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy in both legs over the course of 4 days last week. I was supposed to wear 2 stockings during the day & 1 at night, but my feet kept swelling so my Dr. has instructed me to wear only 1 during the day for 3 weeks. When I took my stockings off last night I immediately felt pain in my left calf. It feels like muscle cramping, almost like a Charlie horse. I feel ok when the stocking is on but the pain returns when I take it off. Is this normal?

I would not say it's not normal. You should see your doctor and have an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot.

Not the usual postoperative complaint. Tell your doctor and he may want an earlier follow-up visit.

I would call your doctor right away. It could mean you have a DVT (deep vein thrombosis).

More than likely the pain you are experiencing is part of the healing process. Many patients feel better for a few weeks after and ELVT/microphlebectomies/sclerotherapy when they wear compression stockings. However, there is always the possibility of a calf DVT, so if not done so already, an ultrasound in the region of pain should be performed.

I would call your physician and consider having an ultrasound. There is a risk of deep vein thrombosis with vein procedures, and you may need an ultrasound to make sure that you have not developed one, especially with swelling and calf pain.

I had EVLT about 2-3 weeks ago and I'm still experiencing sharp pain. It's mostly when I stand or walk. Even when I wear a compression stocking during standing or walking, there is no relief.
