My opinion is that in most cases below-the-knee compression stockings are adequate. The reason for using them is to augment the return of blood from the calf. In my opinion, to really make a difference, thigh-high stockings would have to have so much compression that they would be very difficult to wear. My recommendation is to stick to below-the-knee stockings, either 20–30 or 30-40 mmHg.

It is OK to wear the 30-40mmHg compression. It is really what strength you can handle. It might be a good idea to wear on long flights.

Yes it is absolutely fine to wear the 30-40 mmHg compression hose while flying and for anytime that you will be sitting or standing for a prolonged period of time.

They may be a bit tight, but if you can get them on and they are comfortable you can definitely use them.

30-40mmHg thigh high is OK to wear but all you really need is 20-30mmHg knee length. Most of the muscle pumping action of the legs comes from the calves not the thighs.
